  • Bici North Community Engagement Forum

Posted by Tamera Nicol on 2/26/2021

Dear Bicentennial North School Parents and Guardians:

This is a reminder that the District will be holding a Community Engagement Forum at Bicentennial North to answer questions from affected residents regarding proposed school closures, boundary changes, and/or repurposing of schools.

During the Community Engagement Forum, a presentation of the rationale for proposed school closures, boundary changes and/or repurposing of schools will be presented with the opportunity for affected residents to ask questions that have not been addressed in the Frequently Asked Questions.

The Community Engagement Forum at Bicentennial North School will be held on Monday, March 1, 2021 at 5 p.m. Efforts have been made to ensure CDC guidelines for health and safety at each site during the presentations and Q&A segments of the Community Engagement Forums. Small groups will be rotated into cafeterias and/or gym spaces following social distancing practices. Face coverings will be required at all times.

    Additional Information

The Governing Board may take action on March 11 to close five school structures within the district to address significant budgetary demands due to declining enrollment. If the Governing Board takes action, Bicentennial North School will no longer be operating as a school site and students will be reassigned to other school sites within the district. Transportation will continue to be provided for students. Families will also have options to register for Glendale Elementary Online (GEO) Learning or apply for Open Enrollment.

Phase II - Proposed closure of Bicentennial North School in the 2022-2023 school year. Students would be reassigned and schools would be reconfigured into K-8 models:

    • Bicentennial South (7240 W Colter St, Glendale, AZ 85303)
    • Don Mensendick (5535 N 67th Ave, Glendale, AZ 85301)

This notice and additional information on proposed school closures, boundary changes, and/or repurposing of schools can be found on the GESD website at gesd40.org/boundaryupdates or on our school website.

    • Bicentennial South (7240 W Colter St, Glendale, AZ 85303)
    • Don Mensendick (5535 N 67th Ave, Glendale, AZ 85301)

    Weekly Update

    Hello Bici North Families,

It was great to see many of our students back on line and attending their virtual classes last week!  However, we still have a large number of students that have not logged in or who attend only their homeroom and then log off for the day.  All of the instruction is synchronous, which means students have to attend the live classes.  They cannot just log into their Google Classroom and complete assignments.  There are activities, assignments and assessments that are completed during the live sessions.

Please help us by reminding your child of these expectations:

    • All students are required to log in daily at 8:15AM for homeroom and attendance.
    • All students are required to be on line and in their classes 8:15AM – 1:15PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Wednesdays are early release at 12:15PM.

    Remind
We now have Remind school wide.  If you have already joined your child’s classroom, you do not need to do anything else.  You are automatically a member of the school wide group.  If you have not already joined your child’s classroom, please contact the teacher for their unique code.

    Important Dates
January 13 – all students will take the i-Ready reading assessment during class.  This assessment will help us determine reading groups for Q3.  It is very important that your child attends their virtual classes and takes the assessment.
January 18 – Martin Luther King, Jr Day, no school

    Limited Office Hours
    8AM – 4PM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
Office is closed Wednesday and Friday

    Bici North Families,

As we welcome the New Year, let’s pause and reflect on all that we have been through together and look ahead with hope for the new year. Thank you for your patience and understanding during these trying times.

All three zip codes in GESD continue to be in the Substantial Category.  Therefore, GESD will remain in full remote learning and working until further notice.

A reminder that Monday, January 4th, 2021 is a Professional Development Day for GESD. Onsite support and meal services will not be available on January 4th. Beginning Tuesday, January 5th, students will return to virtual classes and Onsite support will resume at South.

When virtual classes resume on January 5th, we will follow the schedules below.  We are in a fully synchronous model, meaning that teachers will be live during each of these times.  It is important that all students attend all classes each day, just as they would if we were in person.

Students will receive invites to their Quarter 3 classes via Google Classroom.  Please contact your homeroom teacher if you have any questions or concerns about your classes or the schedule.
