K-8 English Language Arts (ELA) Curriculum Adoption Public Review

September 20, 2023 – November 20, 2023

The K-8 English Language Arts Adoption Committee narrowed down submitted programs to McGraw Hill and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. The textbooks will be on display for a 60-day period for public review and comment.

Times: Observed Office Hours, Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Public review locations are also provided at every GESD school and the hours align with each school's observed office hours.

Purpose:

Glendale Elementary School District (GESD) is in the process of selecting a new and updated English Language Arts curriculum for kindergarten through 8th grade. Selecting a curriculum resource for reading is essential to providing meaningful learning experiences for students. It is a driver for equity as well as clarifying instructional strategies and identifying appropriate resources for instructional staff.

Outcomes:

GESD will review and adopt materials that ensure students have access to the most up-to-date English Language Arts materials:

Align to Arizona Department of Education English Language Arts Standards
Address all components essential to the reading process; phonemic awareness, decoding, vocabulary, comprehension, higher thinking skills
includes research-based lesson design
Includes evidenced-based and tiered interventions
Including resources that support the teaching and learning of students needing enrichment and acceleration and support the teaching and learning of English Language Learners and Special Education Learners
It includes culturally relevant materials and culturally responsive teaching and instructional practices that are inclusive.
