Important Message from the Principal, Ms. BernabéPosted by Lance Sinclair on 8/7/2020Hello Smith Families,Thank you for your patience, flexibility, and support as we work together to get our new Distance Learning Plan up and running. We know that we are all learning together, and are excited to get started next week. We ask that you have patience with your student, your child's teacher, and yourself as we are partnering to help students become comfortable with Distance Learning, beginning this Monday, August 10th. We want to be sure that you have important information to help this week go smoothly for you and your students, as well as for our staff. The first day of school is this Monday, August 10th. GEO learning via the Canvas app will not be available until Monday. If you have questions about Canvas and GEO, please refer to the district website, as this program is not housed on our campus. The remainder of our students will begin with Distance Learning using Google Classroom on Monday. Teachers shared their Meet the Teacher Videos on the school website and facebook page yesterday evening, and you can still view the videos there. They are also reaching out to each family to make sure you have the information to join Class Dojo and get your student started with Google Classroom. Since we are beginning with Distance Learning, students will not be allowed on campus, next week, as it is safer at home. Here is some important information about the beginning of the 2020-2021 school year:1. Meals will be distributed to registered Smith students curbside in our bus bay from 10:30 to noon, Monday through Friday. Breakfast and lunch will be included in the bag. Students may provide their ID card if they have one from last year, or our employees can check our rosters to ensure all of our students who would like a meal receive one.2. Teachers will be taking attendance every day on Google Classroom. Be sure to log in by the start of school each day, at 8:15 am. Teachers will also be sharing via class dojo, google classroom, and via email, a form that will help us ensure each student is attending school each day. This form is called the attestation form. If you need a printed copy, you can pick one up from the office. Please help us know your student is engaged in learning by including your student's name, your name, the dates, and the amount of time each day your child engaged in school work. You should return this form to your teacher each week, either by taking a picture and sending it back, or by dropping it off at the office on Fridays. We will have grade level boxes outside of the office for these forms to be returned. Simply find the box with your grade level on it and drop your form inside.3. For those who cannot access Google Classroom, or are not enrolled in GEO, learning packets are available. You may come to the office to pick up a learning packet for the week of August 10th-14th. For future weeks, learning packets will be distributed along with curbside meals on Fridays from 10:30-noon. Next Friday, August 14th, the learning packets will be distributed for the week of August 17th, and so on. If you are able to access Google Classroom, you do not need a learning packet as well, as the topics will be the same. The cover page for the learning packets will also need to be submitted back to the teacher, either by taking a picture and sending it back, or by dropping it off at the office on Fridays. We will have grade level boxes outside of the office for these forms to be returned along with our attendance attestation forms. Simply find the box with your grade level on it and drop your form inside.4. If you have not heard from your child's teacher, please check your voicemail or email that we have on file, as all teachers have been reaching out. If for some reason, you do not have a voicemail or email from your child's teacher, please call the office. We urge you to check your voicemail and email first so that our office phone lines can be left open for those who have not received communication. When you call, please check to be sure we have your correct phone number and primary email address, as we will be communicating with you frequently that way in addition to Class Dojo and the school Facebook page. We ask for your patience as we anticipate a high number of calls during the first few days of school. If you are unable to reach us, please leave a voicemail with your call back number, your name, your students' name(s) and the reason for your call.We are eager to be your partners in what is proving to be a school year full of new learning for everyone! We will see you on Google Classrooms on Monday! If you have a student in Band or Algebra programs at our school, then please stay on the line or keep reading for further information related to these programs. If you do not, please disregard the following information.Band:This message is for parents of Returning Band Students. Intermediate and Advanced Band will be taught online through Canvas for the 1st 9 weeks. By the end of next week students may login to the computer and see their band course when they log into the Canvas application. All students who are interested in joining Band as a beginning student will have that opportunity after we return to in-person learning. Ms. Smith, our band director, is looking forward to seeing all our Band Students Soon!Algebra:This message is for parents of students that will be participating in Algebra and Geometry this school year. Algebra and Geometry are both advanced math classes offered in conjunction with Glendale Union High School District. You will participate in your scheduled math class until then. We look forward to a great year of learning!"
