    Weekly Update

    Hello Bici North Families,

It was great to see many of our students back on line and attending their virtual classes last week!  However, we still have a large number of students that have not logged in or who attend only their homeroom and then log off for the day.  All of the instruction is synchronous, which means students have to attend the live classes.  They cannot just log into their Google Classroom and complete assignments.  There are activities, assignments and assessments that are completed during the live sessions.

Please help us by reminding your child of these expectations:

    • All students are required to log in daily at 8:15AM for homeroom and attendance.
    • All students are required to be on line and in their classes 8:15AM – 1:15PM on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Wednesdays are early release at 12:15PM.

    Remind
We now have Remind school wide.  If you have already joined your child’s classroom, you do not need to do anything else.  You are automatically a member of the school wide group.  If you have not already joined your child’s classroom, please contact the teacher for their unique code.

    Important Dates
January 13 – all students will take the i-Ready reading assessment during class.  This assessment will help us determine reading groups for Q3.  It is very important that your child attends their virtual classes and takes the assessment.
January 18 – Martin Luther King, Jr Day, no school

    Limited Office Hours
    8AM – 4PM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday
Office is closed Wednesday and Friday

    Technology Help
Please contact our District IT department at techhelp@gesd40.org or 623-237-7117

    Bici North Families,

As we welcome the New Year, let’s pause and reflect on all that we have been through together and look ahead with hope for the new year. Thank you for your patience and understanding during these trying times.

All three zip codes in GESD continue to be in the Substantial Category.  Therefore, GESD will remain in full remote learning and working until further notice.

A reminder that Monday, January 4th, 2021 is a Professional Development Day for GESD. Onsite support and meal services will not be available on January 4th. Beginning Tuesday, January 5th, students will return to virtual classes and Onsite support will resume at South.

When virtual classes resume on January 5th, we will follow the schedules below.  We are in a fully synchronous model, meaning that teachers will be live during each of these times.  It is important that all students attend all classes each day, just as they would if we were in person.

Students will receive invites to their Quarter 3 classes via Google Classroom.  Please contact your homeroom teacher if you have any questions or concerns about your classes or the schedule.

All schools will return in a Distance Learning model on January 5th with a possible return to school in a hybrid model of February 1, 2021.  Click here for the latest update.

    Title 1

All seventeen GESD schools qualify for Title 1 federal funds which are used to supplement instructional programs. Title 1 funds are allocated based on the number of students at each school who qualify for free or reduced lunch. Title 1 services vary from school to school based on the school improvement plan. For example, some schools provide after school tutoring while others may have small groups for reading intervention during the day. Click here for specific information about Bici North’s plan.

    Governing Board Proposed Boundary Changes

The Glendale Elementary School District Governing Board met in a Study Session on Thursday, December 10, 2020 to discuss declining enrollment and proposed new boundaries. We recognize that these are difficult conversations and we’re committed to providing you with the latest information regarding the discussions. We ask that you please review the following document. We understand and are empathetic that while the information may cause uncertainty, further dialogue is necessary and will take place at the January 28th Governing Board Study Session. The purpose of the Study Session is to provide the next steps with a possible comprehensive plan for proposed boundary changes, school closures and/or school repurposing.  Click here for more information and the latest updates.

    Wishing you all Happy Holidays,

  • Reopening School

Posted by Tamera Nicol on 7/1/2020

    Dear GESD Families,

On the afternoon of Monday, June 29th, Governor Ducey held a press conference announcing a new executive order. This executive order delayed the start of in-person schooling to August 17, 2020 due primarily to the rise in COVID-19 cases across the state of Arizona.

Though in-person instruction is delayed, the executive order does allow for schools to begin on their normally scheduled start date through distance learning models. We are still reviewing the requirements after the second executive order for the possibility of a distance learning model. As we are currently reviewing the options outlined in the executive order it is clear to note that our parent surveys showed support for both in-person and online instruction. GESD has submitted an application to the State Board of Education for approval of an Arizona Online Instruction (AOI) program.

We know that these changes bring forth many questions with regards to this executive order and how it impacts our preparation and planning for the safe return to the upcoming school year. Please know we are closely monitoring the data and will continue to keep you informed. Please visit our website at www.gesd40.org to see the latest reopening information. A link will go live on Friday, July 10th that outlines GESD’s reopening schools plan and how you can select you child’s preferred learning experience.

We appreciate your continued support as we work through this process.

    Respectfully,

    Cindy Segotta-Jones

    Superintendent

  • Preparing for the reopening of schools

Posted by Tamera Nicol on 6/10/2020

    Dear GESD Families,

Please know that the safety and wellbeing of our staff and students continues to be a priority and decisions will be made based on our public health and elected officials’ guidelines and data gathered from our families and staff. Now that we have received guidance from the Arizona Department of Education, we have created a GESD Task Force to begin preparing for our return to school in August. We previously sought your input and would like to thank you for your responses. We are now asking for additional input from you, to better inform our decisions. This survey was sent out on June 4th, so if you have already responded, there is no need to respond again.

Please visit gesd40.org to complete an important survey. The survey will be open for responses beginning Thursday, June 4 and close at the end of business on Monday, June 15.

You can find the English language survey here.

You can find the Spanish language survey here.

Meanwhile, I hope that your family members stay safe and healthy throughout the summer.

  • Report Cards

Posted by Tamera Nicol on 4/28/2020

Dear Glendale Elementary School District Families,

With the school closure, the following information is in regards to report cards and learning for the fourth quarter term.

Our teachers have been reaching out to students to check-in on their academic, social and emotional wellness needs. We have also provided online and paper packets of enrichment learning opportunities to ensure all students are staying engaged academically as each family’s circumstances allow.

Since 4th quarter academic work is meant to enrich or extend the work already learned throughout the rest of the 2019-2020 school year, the work is not graded or given as homework or as an assignment. Moreover, all essential learning standards were taught previous to quarter four to be ready for the original implementation of the AzM2 assessment and as you know, this assessment has been waived for the 2019-2020 school year.

In order to communicate to all stakeholders, the following items have been established:

    • 4th Quarter Report Cards will not be issued. This does not impact a child’s school record. The 3rd Quarter Report Cards are the last of the school year.
    • Each child will receive a narrative explanation of what they should work on over the summer to be ready for the next grade level from their teacher. This document along with 3rd Quarter Benchmark result for 3rd-8th grade will be provided to families by May 21st.
    • Your child’s teacher will continue to provide learning opportunities and enrichment packets are now available online through May 21st. Teachers will continue to check on your child through phone, Google Classroom, email, and/or Class Dojo, Bloom, etc.
    • When school resumes, students will have an assessment of skills to see if there are gaps between this current year and the next year prerequisite skills. When we are back in session, staff will then have a course of action to meet individual learning needs.

Please stay healthy and safe as you Stay Home, Stay Healthy, and Stay Connected.
