• In-Person Learning Update

Posted by Angelique Saiz on 10/14/2020

    Hello Discovery Families,

After looking at the most current health metrics that were released yesterday (10-8-20), it has been determined by the Maricopa County Department of Public Health that our zip code, 85303, does not have data favorable for an In-Person Hybrid return to school at this time.

This means that Discovery students will remain in our Distance Learning Model after Fall Break. Students will not return for In-Person Learning on our projected date of October 19th.  Students will continue their Distance Learning virtually in their Google Classrooms.

We will continue to follow the data shown through our Health Metrics and will update families with any changes.

Please check your email for additional information regarding this message from our GESD district office.

We appreciate your understanding as we work toward a safe and healthy return back to school.  We hope you have a happy and restful Fall Break.

  • End of Quarter 1 Announcements/Reminders

Posted by Sarah Saints on 9/30/2020

    Hello Discovery Families,

We have a few announcements/reminders as we head into the final week of our first quarter of the year.  We know this first quarter was a new experience for us all and we appreciate the partnership and support from our parents.

    Peter Piper Pizza Day Fundraiser

Please help support our school and our PTSA by visiting Peter Piper Pizza (located on 91st Ave and Peoria) this Thursday, October 1st,  from 11am-8pm.  The event covers both dine-in and carryout sales.  Please mention you are visiting from Discovery School to contribute to our fundraiser.

    Free COVID-19 Testing

On Saturday, October 3rd, Discovery is hosting free COVID-19 testing conducted by Valle Del Sol for our community.  Testing will take place from 8:00am - 1:00pm in our cafeteria.  Those wishing to be tested are encouraged to pre-register.

    Free COVID-19 Testing Information

    Parent-Teacher Conferences

Next week, October 5th-October 9th, is Parent-Teacher Conference Week.  Wednesday, Thursday and Friday (10/7, 10/8 & 10/9) are early release days, with the school day ending at 11:45am to allow teachers and families time to conference.  Our teachers are excited to conference with you virtually through a phone or video conference.  Our goal for Discovery conferences is 100% participation.  We thank you in advance for scheduling a conference time to discuss your student’s academic data and next steps for growth!

    Fall Break

There is no school the week of October 12th – October 16th for Fall Break.  We hope you enjoy the break and time with your family.

    October 19th Projected In-Person Date

Our families received communication from GESD recently stating that if our health metric data continues to be favorable, we project we’ll be able to reopen our schools on Monday, October 19th.  We are continuing to monitor the health metrics (provided by the Arizona Department of Health Services and the Maricopa County Health Department) and will be in communication with our families with detailed information for a transition back to school.

Please continue to check our district and school websites, Facebook pages, your email, phone dialer calls and messages from teachers as we will communicate a return model to our families as soon as we can.

Please note that next week, students may be asked to engage in more independent activities during the school day to allow time for teachers and staff to prepare for our return to in-person learning.  Your child’s teacher can provide you with specific details regarding instruction next week.

Again, we thank you for your continued support and understanding.  We are grateful for our Discovery Families!

    Hello Discovery Families,

We hope you had a restful and safe Labor Day holiday weekend.  We look forward to seeing all of our students in their Google Classrooms tomorrow morning!

GESD is actively preparing for the return of in-person learning as soon as public health metrics are met for our district.  Once the district reaches the state and county health metrics that indicate we can safely open, we will begin our transition to in-person learning. The actual dates to reopen will be determined and shared once health metrics are met. You can view the GESD health metrics at: https://www.maricopa.gov/5594/School-Metrics.

If you have not yet completed the Return to In-Person Instruction Survey, please do so by Wednesday, September 9th.  You can find the survey at:   https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/R5C6NQ7

  • Distance Learning Reminders

Posted by Angelique Saiz on 8/28/2020 2:00:00 PM

    Hello Discovery Families,

We want to start by thanking each and every one of you for your partnership with our staff and teachers as we start this new year together.  We appreciate how hard our families and teachers are working to ensure our students are receiving the quality education they all deserve.  Our students are right there alongside us as they learn to learn in a new way.  It is exciting to see the growth that is happening for us all!

    Distance Learning Videos for Families

Please visit our Discovery website to find videos for families on how to navigate through Google Classroom (for our Distance Learners).  Videos give information on the format of Google Classroom, how to complete and submit assignments, and how to utilize your student’s Google Calendar.  We will continue to add more videos to support Distance Learning.  You can find these video clips by going to our Discovery website, hover on the ‘Families’ tab, and select ‘Distance Learning Support.’

    Google Meet Reminders

We appreciate all students who are joining in with their teacher and classmates for live instruction.  Please remember that when your child’s camera/microphone is on, others in the Meet may be able to see and hear the learning environment.  Please help your child set up a space for learning that both you and your child feel comfortable with if your child is participating in their live learning sessions.

While we understand that students are learning in a very familiar place (their home), please help to ensure your child is wearing appropriate clothing during their school day (not missing major articles of clothing).  This is to protect the learning environment, but more importantly to protect the privacy and safety of your child.  Please reach out to our school if your family has a need for these items.

    Class Grades/Participation

Please remind your child (we are doing the same!) to attend all classes assigned to them in their Google Classroom.  Students should be using the resources available in the Google Classroom to complete their work for all subject areas.  Students are able to access content/instructional videos outside of the school day.

No School Friday, September 4th & Monday, September 7th

Teachers have full day Professional Development on Friday (9/4), and there is no school due to the Labor Day Holiday on Monday (9/7).  Teachers will not be presenting live instruction on those days.  Meal services will also not be provided on those days.

    Attestation Forms

Please help us track student attendance by completing and submitting the parent attestation form weekly.  Our instructional day for students is 300 minutes, and our school day is 7:45am-12:45pm.

    Best of Glendale 2020

We are excited to announce that Glendale Elementary School District will be in the running for the City of Glendale’s Best School District.  Starting now through September 24th, the Glendale Star will be conducting online voting for a Best of Glendale special issue.  We encourage you to answer all 88 questions, but you can also skip to page six and answer questions 79, 80 and 82; that are specific to the GESD.

You can select ‘Other’ and type in a response for the best school, elementary school, school teacher and best mascot.

Below is the link to vote.  YOU CAN VOTE DAILY!

We appreciate your continued support and hope you and your families are all staying safe and healthy!

  • Reminders

Posted by Angelique Saiz on 8/12/2020

    Hi Discovery Families,

Welcome back to school!  Thank you all so much for your patience and understanding as we started an unusual school year.  We appreciate your partnership as we work together to help your student(s) have a great learning experience.

    Attendance Forms:

    Distance Learning/In-Person Parents:

Please complete and sign the attached form to document the amount of time your student spent engaged in learning each day.  This will be available in your child's Google Classroom, in the paper Learning Packet and is posted on our Discovery website (see the ‘Attendance’ tab).  This form will be used to verify student attendance.

Some of this time will be live instruction with the teacher, some will be pre-recorded instruction from the teacher and some will be independent work.  Our school hours are from 7:45am-12:45pm Monday – Friday. Weekly details are provided in your child’s assigned Google Classroom(s).

You may return this form using the drop-off box located outside our front office OR submit electronically to your child’s teacher.  These will need to be submitted weekly.

    GEO Parents:

Your child’s GEO teacher will provide additional information on submitting their attendance form.

    Learning Packets:

    Distance Learning/In-Person Parents:

Learning packets for Week 2 will be available on Friday in the cubbies located outside the office and cafeteria.  These are only for students who are enrolled in the Distance Learning/In-Person pathway.  These can be used if you do not have internet access or alongside the work in your Google Classroom.  Please make sure the attendance form included in your packet is signed and returned weekly.

    Virtual Learning Environment:

Please remember that when students and teachers are engaged in virtual meetings, we must be mindful of the learning environment.  Appropriate behavior and language is expected to protect the educational setting.  If students are video conferencing, remember that background noise and images may also be captured.  We appreciate your support as we all learn through this together.

We are grateful to have our students back and are looking forward to a great year together!

Please remember that students are learning virtually until it is determined it is safe for in-person learning to resume.  School begins virtually on Monday.  No students should report to campus on the first day of school, Monday, August 10th.

Students who are engaging in In-Person Learning (now Distance Learning while we are not on campus – all teachers will be using Google Classroom for instruction):

    • You may pick up a paper Learning Packet (to use alongside your Google Classroom instruction OR to use independently if you do not have internet access) starting Monday morning at 7:00am.  You will find these in cubbies located outside the cafeteria and outside the front office.  Look for your child’s grade level and take a packet!  These will be available all week.
    • Paper Learning Packets will be created by your child’s teacher and include a week’s worth of instruction.  They can be used with your student’s Google Classroom instruction.
    • If needed, you may pick up a bag of basic school supplies from our front office during office hours, Monday through Friday from 7:15am to 3:30pm.

Students who are engaging in GEO Learning (Glendale Elementary Online Learning – GESD’s ONLINE program):

    • You will be receiving emails with more information/videos regarding GEO.

Beginning August 10th, lunch distribution will be Monday through Friday, 10:30am to 12:00pm.  It will still be curbside pickup and breakfast and lunch will be provided at the same time.  Please bring your student’s school ID to receive a meal.  If you do not have a school ID, we will have rosters to verify your student’s enrollment.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through many moving pieces.  Please continue to check our school website and Facebook pages for the most current information.  We are excited to begin another great school year together!  See you Monday (virtually)!
